The Arabic al-kimiya is the ancestor of two English words. Drop the article and you get chemistry; keep it and you get alchemy. The same word came into Persian as kimiya, meaning the elixir itself, and then anything rare and precious. In Swahili the identical spelling means something else entirely: silence.

Where it comes from

The story of Kimya

Alchemy is one of the words Europe took from Arabic and then forgot it had taken: al-kimiya passed through medieval Latin as alchimia, lost its article in the seventeenth century when the practice split from the science, and left chemistry behind. Persian kept the word for the goal rather than the craft, so kimiya is the substance that turns metal to gold, and calling something kimiya in Persian poetry means it is precious beyond finding. Swahili arrived at the same five letters from the other side of the continent with no connection at all: kimya is silence, from a Bantu root, in a language that also gave the world safari and jenga.

Meaningscholars disagree

silence — or, in the other reading, the elixir

Swahili kimya is the ordinary word for silence or quiet. Persian kimiya means alchemy, the philosopher's stone, and by extension anything rare enough to be almost unobtainable. The two are unrelated and both are given as names. The spelling does not choose.

Kimya sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1974, with 38 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kimya went to 8 girls in 2025, but Kimia is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 24, which makes it the 936th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,981 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 66,969 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Kimya itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two documented meanings in two living languages, neither of them invented.
  • Kim and Mya both work as short forms and both are full names.
  • Five letters, easy to spell after one hearing.
What to consider
  • Kimia is the commoner Persian spelling and Kimya the Swahili one; both will be suggested as corrections.
  • It will be heard as a variant of Kim or of Maya rather than as a name of its own.
  • The two possible meanings have nothing in common, so the answer depends on the family.
