Where it comes from

Our story of Kileigh

A kiln is a kitchen. The Old English cyln came from the Latin culina, a cookhouse — the same word behind culinary — and it came to mean any oven-like structure for firing rather than cooking. The interesting part is the l. For centuries the traditional pronunciation was kill, with the l silent, exactly as in half and palm, and potters said it that way as a trade pronunciation well into the twentieth century; older dictionaries give kill as the only form. The spelling pronunciation, with the l sounded, has almost entirely displaced it, and a potter saying kill now sounds archaic rather than correct. It is a rare case of a silent letter being restored to speech inside a century, and it happened because more people read the word than heard it.

Fashion outlook

Kileigh sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so nobody has to be taught it.
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy and quick.
  • Both halves detach as short forms.
What to consider
  • Kylie, Kiley and Kyleigh are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • Four letters for one vowel means the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • The name has no first form, so there is nothing for it to be a variant of.
