Where it comes from

The story of Kevyn

Coemgen of Glendalough, who died in the seventh century, founded a monastery in a steep valley in Wicklow that became one of the great Irish religious sites, with a round tower and a set of churches still standing. The stories told about him are all about stillness and animals: the blackbird nesting in his outstretched hand, the otter that brought him salmon, the years spent in a cave above the lake. None of them is historical and all of them are old, and they made him one of the best loved of the Irish saints. The name means gentle, which fits the legend a little too neatly. It became an ordinary American and British name in the twentieth century, and this spelling belongs to the late respelling phase.

Meaning

Kevyn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2007, with 106 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kevyn went to 6 boys in 2025, but Kevin is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 1,634, which makes it the 223rd most-given boys’ name of the year — 10,472 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 1,045 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 284,679 for Kevyn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
