Where it comes from

The story of Kerstin

Swedish did something to this name that other languages did not: it moved the r. Christina in Swedish mouths became Kerstin, with the consonant jumping in front of the vowel, and that is not a spelling variant but a genuine sound change of the kind linguists call metathesis — the same process that turned Old English brid into bird. Once the change had happened Swedish kept it, and Kerstin has been an ordinary Swedish woman's name since the Middle Ages. It came to America with Swedish immigration and remains far rarer here than the American respellings that resemble it.

Meaning

a Christian

From the Latin christiana by way of the northern languages. Swedish arrived at this form by moving a consonant, and it has been settled there for six hundred years.

Kerstin sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1998, with 97 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Kerstin sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a genuine Swedish name with six centuries behind it, not a respelling.
  • Stina is a real Scandinavian short form rather than an invented one.
  • It is distinctive on the page while being close to a very familiar sound.
What to consider
  • Swedish says the first letter as a sh, and almost nobody in America will.
  • Kirsten and Kiersten are both commoner here and will be written instead.
  • It reads as Scandinavian, which is accurate for once and still needs explaining.
