Our story of Kerrick
One of the few Latin words the Romans left in Britain that ordinary English then used for centuries is the one behind the wick and wich in place names. It came from vicus, a settlement or a row of houses, and English speakers took it as a word for a farm, a dairy or a trading place. Greenwich, Norwich, Ipswich, Warwick and Berwick all carry it, and so does the older sense of a dairy farm, which is why butter and cheese words cluster round it in old documents. It survives as a living word in exactly one place: bailiwick, the district a bailiff has authority over, which is now used almost entirely as a metaphor for a person's area of competence. The candle wick is a separate word with no connection at all, which is the sort of accident English produces constantly.

Fashion outlook
Kerrick sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It sounds like an established surname-name without being one anybody else is using.
- Rick is available as a short form and needs no explanation to anyone.
- Two syllables with front stress is the plainest and most durable shape for a man's name.
- Kerrik, Cedric and Derrick will all be written for it at various times.
- Nothing is documented about its origin, so the meaning question has no answer.
- It reads as a surname, which suits some settings and not others.
