Where it comes from

Our story of Kern

English writers of the sixteenth century use kern for the Irish light infantry: unarmored, fast, armed with javelins and swords, and regarded by English commanders as either useless or terrifying depending on the terrain. The word came from the Irish for a band of soldiers, and Shakespeare uses it. Quite separately, in typesetting, a kern is the part of a letter that overhangs the metal body of the type so that two letters can sit closer together, which is why adjusting the space between letters is called kerning. And separately again, Kern is a common German surname meaning a kernel or seed. Three words, four letters, no connection.

Not established

The German surname, the Irish military term and the typographic word are three unrelated things that arrive at the same four letters. The record does not say which a family meant.

Fashion outlook

Kern sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters and one syllable: as quick as a name gets to write and to say.
  • It is read correctly at first sight by everybody.
  • It is genuinely rare as a first name while being entirely familiar as a sound.
What to consider
  • It reads as a surname to most listeners, which suits some families and not others.
  • Anybody who works with type will read it as a technical term first.
  • No origin is documented for the first name, so the meaning question has three candidates and no answer.
