Where it comes from

Our story of Kerianne

County Kerry is the far south-western corner of Ireland, and for a place with poor soil and worse weather it has produced a remarkable number of named things. The Kerry cow is one of the oldest cattle breeds in Europe, small, black and able to live on ground that would starve anything else, and it was the household cow of the Irish poor for centuries. The Kerry Blue terrier is the national dog, born black and turning slate blue as it matures, with a folk history involving a shipwreck that is almost certainly invented. There is also a Kerry slug, found in Ireland and northern Spain and nowhere in between, which is a real puzzle in biogeography. The county name itself comes from an ancient people, the Ciarraige, whose own name is built on a word for dark.

The front is Kerry or Keri, and the back is Anne. Whether the compound was built to honor two people, or simply because the sounds fit together, is not recorded, which is the usual situation for names of this kind.

Fashion outlook

Kerianne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are familiar names, so the compound is unusual without being strange.
  • Keri and Annie are both available as short forms without any work.
  • It is read correctly at first sight by nearly everyone.
What to consider
  • Written solid it will be split into two words by people who assume the space belongs there.
  • Kerriann, Kerryanne and Keriann are all in the record, so the spelling will be checked back with you.
  • Two stress patterns are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
