Where it comes from

Our story of Keonna

The feminine ending is the oldest tool in this workshop and the least remarked on. Long before prefixes and rhyme families, American naming was making girls' names by adding -a, -ette, -ine or -elle to boys' names: Roberta, Paulette, Josephine, Danielle. What changed in the late twentieth century is which endings were used and how freely. The doubled -onna and -anna endings arrive in the 1970s and 1980s and attach to almost anything: Keonna, Deonna, Rayonna, Shaonna, Tionna. What they do that a plain -a does not is add a full syllable with its own weight, which lengthens the name and moves the stress to the middle. Keonna's 1995 peak sits at the height of that ending's run, and Keon itself was peaking at almost the same time.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source establishes an etymology. Keon appears in American records from the 1970s and is variously explained as a respelling of Irish Keane, as a form of Keyon, and as an original coinage; none is documented. Hawaiian Keona, from the definite article ke and a second element, is a genuine but unrelated word. The -onna ending is an American feminine suffix.

Keonna sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1995, with 91 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Keonna went to 23 girls in 2025, but Keona is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 73, which makes it the 887th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,523 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 22,017 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 69,881 for Keonna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
