The story of Keoki
George reached Hawaii with the British and American ships that followed Cook's arrival in 1778, and it had to be remade to fit a language with a small set of sounds. When the missionaries settled the written alphabet in 1826, they chose five vowels and seven consonants, taking k over t, l over r and w over v where Hawaiian speech wavered between them. Run through that system, George came out as Keoki: both j-sounds became k, each consonant got its own vowel, and one syllable grew into three.

Fashion outlook
Keoki sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- A Hawaiian form of one of the best-known names in English.
- Easy to say once heard: three open syllables.
- Rare outside Hawaii, so it will seldom be shared.
- Outside Hawaii many people will not know it is George, and some will guess at a Hawaiian meaning it does not have.
- English speakers may run it into two syllables, KYOH-kee; the three-syllable Hawaiian saying needs stating.
