Kenyata

Kenyata comes from a surname, and the surname was not inherited. The man best known for carrying it chose it for himself as a young adult, before the country he would later lead had a government of its own. Names usually travel from parents down to children. This one went the other way first, and then began traveling the ordinary way in a different country.

The story of Kenyata
Jomo Kenyatta was born under another name and took this one in his twenties, so it belonged to no family line before him. What is less often mentioned is what he did next. He went to London, studied social anthropology at the London School of Economics under Bronisław Malinowski, and wrote an ethnography of the Kikuyu called Facing Mount Kenya. It was one of the first books in which an African scholar described an African society to a European academic audience on his own terms, and it is still read. He later led Kenya as its first head of government. American families began giving the surname to children as a first name, sometimes with the second t dropped, and the record holds this spelling for boys and girls alike.

Not established
The surname's own sense is not settled in the sources, and this American spelling, with one t rather than two, stands another step away from it. What is documented is who carried the name and how it reached American birth records.
Pronouncing Kenyata
ken-YAH-tuh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The single t is said exactly like the doubled one, so the spelling difference is invisible in speech.

Fashion outlook
Kenyata sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is spelled the way it sounds and stressed where an English speaker expects, so it survives a roll call intact.
- It is attached to a documented twentieth-century life that a child can go and read about.
- It is recorded for boys and for girls, which leaves a question open rather than closing it.
- The famous spelling carries two t's, so this one will be corrected almost every time it is written down by somebody else.
- Most children with this spelling are girls, but a real minority are boys; either may be taken for the other.
- A name tied closely to one well-known political figure carries his reputation along with it, and reputations are argued over.
