Kennadie is a surname turned into a girl's name and then respelled twice over — the middle vowel changed and the ending swapped for the one American naming uses to mark a daughter. The surname itself has been through something stranger: it once took over a place name four centuries old, and then had to give it back.

Where it comes from

Our story of Kennadie

Spanish navigators had put Canaveral on their charts by the middle of the sixteenth century, and the cape kept that name for four hundred years. Within a week of the assassination, the president's successor announced that the launch site and the cape itself would be renamed for him, and the maps were changed: Cape Kennedy. Floridians disliked it. The old name was one of the oldest surviving European place names in the country, and people who had grown up with it went on using it. Ten years later the state legislature voted the name Canaveral back, and the cape has been Canaveral ever since. The space center kept the president's name and still has it, so the two sit side by side today: a Kennedy Space Center on Cape Canaveral, the compromise left by an argument most people have forgotten.

Fashion outlook

Kennadie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Kenna comes off it cleanly and is a complete name on its own.
  • The stress pattern is the standard English one for a three-syllable name, so nobody has to be taught it.
  • It is recognizable at once while being spelled in a way almost nobody else uses.
What to consider
  • Kennedy is overwhelmingly the commoner spelling and will be written by default.
  • The surname carries a political association that arrives before the child does.
  • Neither of the two changes to the spelling can be heard, so the name must be spelled out every time.
