Kelleen joins an Irish surname to the ending American naming used heavily in the middle of the last century, and nothing records the join. The best-known bearer of that surname made himself a suit of armor, and the strange thing is that it worked.

Where it comes from

Our story of Kelleen

Ned Kelly's gang made armor out of stolen plow mouldboards, beaten into shape over a log: a cylindrical body plate, shoulder plates and a helmet with a slit, weighing something like ninety pounds a set. At the final siege they wore it out into police gunfire, and the bullets bounced. It failed for the obvious reason — the police worked out that the legs were unprotected, shot him in them, and he went down. The armor survives in museums with the dents in it, and it has done more for the legend than anything he actually did: a bank robber in a home-made iron mask is an image that outlives its own story. Whether he was a police-hounded selector's son or a murderer is argued in Australia to this day, usually along lines that have very little to do with the evidence.

The front is an anglicized Irish surname built on a personal name usually connected to a word about war or strife. The -een ending is a free element, though it happens to coincide with an Irish diminutive. Nothing documents the combination.

Fashion outlook

Kelleen sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves detach as short forms and each is usable on its own.
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
  • The spelling is phonetic and survives being heard once.
What to consider
  • Kathleen, Kelleen and Colleen will all be confused in speech.
  • Stress placement is unsettled, so strangers will say it two ways.
  • The ending carries no meaning, so the origin question has a short answer.
