The story of Kellee
There is no single Kelly family. At least four distinct septs of Ó Ceallaigh arose independently in Ireland — in Connacht, in Leinster, in Munster — each descended from a different man called Ceallach, and they have no more relation to each other than any two families sharing a common word. Emigration flattened all of that into one surname, and America then did what it does with Irish surnames: it moved this one to the front of the name, gave it first to boys, then to girls, and finally began respelling it. Kellee is the version that spells out its own final vowel, and in the American record it is given to boys as well as girls.
