A kiosk was a palace. The Turkish köşk, from the Persian kūshk, named an open pavilion in a garden — a roofed structure with columns and no walls, built for sitting in the cool of an evening, and some of them were substantial buildings attached to Ottoman palaces. European travelers brought the word back with the architecture, and eighteenth-century English garden designers put up kiosks in the Turkish style as ornaments. The French then applied the word to the small open structures selling newspapers on Paris pavements, apparently on the strength of the shape alone, and that sense crossed back into English and swallowed the original. So a word that meant a prince's garden pavilion now means a booth in a shopping center selling phone cases.
