Where it comes from

Our story of Keilan

Ours, offered as ours. There is a genuine seventh-century Irishman standing near this name. Cillian left Ireland for Franconia, preached at Würzburg, and was killed there; his name is built on the Irish word for a small church or monastic cell. Whether any American family reached Keilan by that road is not recorded, and the resemblance is real enough to be worth mentioning without being claimed as a descent.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source is established for this spelling. Two documented neighbors: Irish Cillian, from a word for a church or a cell, borne by a seventh-century missionary; and Kellan, from the Irish surname Ó Caolláin. Neither is confirmed as the source, and a construction from Kei- and -lan is equally plausible.

Keilan sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2007, with 64 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Keilan went to 33 boys in 2025, but Keylan is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 63, which makes it the 865th most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,585 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 27,112 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 51,760 for Keilan itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths

  • Two genuine Irish names stand nearby, which gives it somewhere to point.
  • Rare in the records, so it stays distinct on a class list.
What to consider
  • The first vowel is unsettled between KY and KEE.
  • Kellan, Kilian and Keilan are all in use and none is dominant.
  • There is no documented meaning for this spelling.
