Where it comes from

Our story of Keera

To keen is to wail formally over a death, and the word came into English from the Irish caoineadh, which named a specific and highly developed art. A keener was usually a woman, often hired, and her job at a wake was to lead the lament: improvised verse praising the dead and reproaching them for leaving, delivered in a form with its own rules and its own reputation. Some keens were written down and they are extraordinary poems. The Church disapproved of the practice for centuries and it faded within living memory, but the verb is still in English dictionaries, doing a quieter job than it used to. It is one of a very short list of Irish words English borrowed, which also includes galore, brogue, whiskey and slogan.

If the name follows the Irish Ciara, it carries a word meaning dark and the reading is settled for that name. If this spelling was arrived at independently, which several in its family were, it carries nothing. The record does not distinguish them.

Keera sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2006, with 38 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Keera sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling tells an English reader how to say it, which is the whole advantage it has.
  • Two syllables and five letters: easy to write and easy to learn to spell.
  • It is soft and clear, and carries well across a room.
What to consider
  • Kiera, Keira and Ciara are all in the record, so the spelling will be checked back with you constantly.
  • Anyone who knows the Irish spelling may treat this one as a mistake, which it is not.
  • No origin is documented for this form, so the meaning question has two answers and no settled one.
