Where it comes from

The story of Keenen

Learned families in Gaelic Ireland held their positions hereditarily: a lord retained a family of poets, a family of lawyers, a family of doctors and a family of historians, and the office passed from father to son along with the books. The Ó Cianáin were historians, and Tadhg Ó Cianáin went with the earls when they sailed from Rathmullan in sixteen hundred and seven, keeping a day-by-day journal of the voyage and the journey across Europe to Rome. It is the only account by somebody who was there. He died in Rome a few years later, and the manuscript survived. A whole social system in which knowledge was inherited like land ended within a generation of that voyage.

Meaning

Descendant of the ancient one

Irish cian means distant, long ago or enduring, and it stands in Cian, Kiernan, Keane and this surname among others. The diminutive and the descendant marker are both regular. So the name describes an ancestor as old or long-lived, which is a compliment in a society that valued genealogy.

Fashion outlook

Keenen sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, firm and easy to say, with a documented Irish history behind it.
  • The meaning is unusual and can be given to a child in a few words.
  • The spelling is unambiguous once seen, whatever the alternatives.
What to consider
  • Keenan is the commoner spelling and will be written by anyone taking dictation.
  • It reads as a surname and will be entered in the wrong column on forms.
  • The first syllable is an English word, which children will find.
