The story of Keeli
The surname had a strange American moment. Leslie Keeley ran an institute in Illinois offering a cure for drunkenness by injection, claiming a secret gold-based formula and a success rate above ninety per cent; by the eighteen-nineties there were more than a hundred and twenty franchised branches across forty states and several other countries, and hundreds of thousands of people took the course. Graduates formed clubs and held reunions. The formula, when it was eventually analyzed, contained no gold and a good deal of alcohol, and the whole thing collapsed within a generation of his death. It is one of the largest medical enterprises in American history and it was based on nothing, and the name on the door was this one.
