Where it comes from

Our story of Keasha

English has two words spelled cash and they are unrelated. The one everybody uses came from Italian and French words for a money box, from the Latin for a case, and originally meant the box rather than the contents. The other came from Tamil and Sanskrit by way of Portuguese traders, and it named a specific coin: a small copper piece with a square hole in the middle, strung in hundreds on a cord, used in southern India and across China and Southeast Asia. Europeans in Asia used the word constantly, and it appears throughout colonial trade records. The two met in English, looked identical, and merged in most people's minds, so that the phrase hard cash now suggests the box word when the coin word was the harder of the two by a considerable margin.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source is documented. This family was built in America from a front syllable and an ending, and the spellings multiplied faster than the name itself did. Glosses naming Arabic, Hebrew or an African language are attached afterwards, and naming a specific language is usually the sign that no source was found.

Pronouncing Keasha

KEE-shuh

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The ea is read as a long e, which is one of at least three things that pair does in English and the reason this family has so many spellings.

Keasha sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1975, with 33 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Keasha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables with front stress is easy to say and hard to mishear.
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so nobody has to be taught it.
  • It is compact and fits any form without abbreviation.
What to consider
  • Keisha, Kiesha and Kesha are all commoner and will be written for it.
  • The spelling has to be given aloud every time, without exception.
  • No meaning can honestly be given, and the ones circulating online are invented.
