Where it comes from
From English governor is reshaped into Maori as kawana to Kawana
The story of Kawana
When missionaries began writing Maori down in the early nineteenth century they had to find ways to say things the language had no words for, and one of those things was a British governor. Maori has a small consonant inventory and every syllable ends in a vowel, so the English word was rebuilt to fit: governor became kawana. From it came kawanatanga, governorship or government — and that word sits at the center of the most consequential translation dispute in New Zealand's history, because it is the word used in the Maori text of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 where the English text says sovereignty. Maori signatories understood they were granting a power of governance; the Crown read the English and claimed sovereignty. Everything that followed turned partly on that one borrowed, reshaped English word.

As an American name this has no recorded derivation. It follows a pattern that was highly productive in the middle of the twentieth century — a light opening syllable fixed to a two-syllable ending, in the same family as Kadena, Lawana and Rowena — and names built that way were made for their shape. The Maori word described below is spelled identically in English and means something specific, but there is no evidence of a connection, and asserting one would be inventing a heritage the record does not support.
How the name formed
- English governor is reshaped into Maori as kawana
- 1840: kawanatanga appears in the Maori text of the Treaty of Waitangi
- American parents build names from a light syllable and a two-syllable ending
- Kawana is recorded as a girl's name in the United States
Pronouncing Kawana
kuh-WAH-nuh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The Maori word is said with more even weight across the syllables and a fuller first vowel, kah-WAH-nah; the American name has the reduced first syllable that English gives to almost everything unstressed.

Fashion outlook
Kawana sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Smooth and open, with no consonant cluster anywhere in it
- Spelled exactly as it sounds, so it survives being written down from hearing
- Rare in America without being difficult for anyone to say
- It is a live word in another country, which a child may hear about from anyone who knows New Zealand.
- There is no meaning behind the American name to give a child who asks.
- Names built on this pattern date to a particular stretch of the twentieth century and are usually placed correctly by ear.
