Where it comes from

The story of Katryna

Hurricanes were given only women's names for about thirty years, on a convention borrowed from a wartime forecasting habit and formalized in the fifties. It was criticized from the start and steadily more loudly, on the grounds that assigning destructive weather exclusively to women's names was doing something unpleasant in public every season, and in the late seventies the lists were changed to alternate men's and women's names. Names of storms that cause enough damage are retired permanently, which means a handful of ordinary names have been quietly taken out of circulation by committee.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Greek name behind the whole family has never been explained; the reading of pure was attached to it centuries after it was in use. The y and the altered ending in this spelling carry nothing of their own.

Fashion outlook

Katryna sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is read correctly on sight in spite of the spelling.
  • The middle stress carries well.
  • It has short forms in several languages.
What to consider
  • Katrina is the standard spelling and hers will be corrected to it.
  • The storm association is strong for anyone who remembers it.
  • The meaning of the name behind it has never been established.
