Where it comes from

The story of Kathren

The name came out of Greek, passed through Latin, and reached England early enough to be worn down thoroughly. Written it has three syllables; said, it has had two for a very long time, which is why Kathren, Kathryn and Cathrin all exist and all look like errors to people who have only ever seen the long form. The name's standing in England owes a great deal to Katherine Swynford, who was governess in the household of John of Gaunt, then his mistress for decades, then his wife; Parliament legitimized her children, and their descendants became the Tudor line. Chaucer married her sister. After that, Katherine was not a name anybody needed to explain.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Greek original, Aikaterine, has never been explained. The familiar reading of pure comes from katharos, a Greek word for clean, which was attached to the name centuries after it was in use — and it left a mark, because that is why the h was inserted into Katherine in the first place. The spelling is evidence of a guess, not of a meaning. Nobody has recovered what the name meant before the guess.

Kathren sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1956, with 26 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Kathren sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It gives a child the deepest short-form bench of any woman's name in English: Kate, Kit, Kathy, Katie, Kay.
  • The name behind it is understood in every European language, which is a real convenience abroad.
  • This spelling is the one that matches how the name is actually said, so it is never mispronounced.
What to consider
  • Every form will be corrected toward Katherine or Kathryn by people who assume the e is a slip.
  • The name is common enough across older generations that it may read as inherited rather than chosen.
  • The pure reading she will be given at school is a folk etymology, and it is worth telling her so before somebody else tells her it is fact.
