Kathe
Feminine · “unknown”
Kathe is the German short form of Katharina, and in German the final letter is a syllable. That is the single largest difference between how the two languages read the same alphabet: German sounds a final e and English swallows it. The name is two syllables in Berlin and one in most American mouths.

The story of Kathe
Kathe Kollwitz spent her life drawing people at the worst moments of theirs — weavers, the starving, women holding dead children — and was the first woman elected to the Prussian Academy of Arts. Her younger son volunteered in the first weeks of the war and was killed in Flanders within two months. She began a memorial for him almost at once and finished it eighteen years later: two granite figures, a mother and a father, kneeling apart from each other, and neither of them looking at the grave. The Nazis removed her from the Academy and forbade her to exhibit. The figures are still in the cemetery in Belgium where her son is buried.

unknown, though long read as pure
The Greek name behind every Catherine in Europe has never been explained. What this form shows is a difference of orthographic habit rather than of meaning. English lost its final unstressed vowels in the late Middle Ages but kept writing them, which is why so many English words end in a letter nobody says; German kept the vowel and kept the letter. So Kathe is KAY-tuh where an English reader expects Kayth, and the disagreement is four hundred years old.

Fashion outlook
Kathe sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Five letters, and the name behind it is one of the most established in Europe.
- Kath and Katie are both available for a child who wants something more familiar.
- It has a namesake of real seriousness who is not overexposed.
- The pronunciation will be wrong more often than right in an English-speaking country.
- It will be written Kathy, Kate and Kathe interchangeably by people who have heard it once.
- Without the German context the spelling reads as an incomplete Katherine.
