Katharyn
Feminine
Katharyn crosses the oldest part of the name with the newest. The a in the middle belongs to a spelling tradition centuries old; the y at the end belongs to a fashion that arrived in the last hundred years and swept through every name that could take it. Very few spellings manage to be archaic and modern at the same time, and this one does it in a single word.

The story of Katharyn
The bearer worth knowing is the one who survived. Katherine Parr married a king who had already discarded or executed four wives and buried a fifth, kept her position through a serious attempt by his own councillors to have her arrested for heresy, and outlived him. She was also, and this is the part usually left out, an author: she published devotional books under her own name while queen, which no English queen had done before, and one of them went through numerous editions. She ran the kingdom as regent while her husband was campaigning in France. She brought his three children back into the household and into the succession. The name she carried was already one of the most heavily used in England, and the spellings of it were already multiplying, which is why a name with a completely unknown meaning has more written forms than most names with well-documented ones.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The name's origin has never been established. The Greek form appears without explanation, the meanings offered for it in reference works are all later attempts, and the most popular of them was constructed to fit a spelling that had itself been altered to suit the meaning. That is a circle, and it is worth naming as one. What can be said is that the name is very old, has been in continuous use across Europe for many centuries, and has produced more spellings than almost any other.

Fashion outlook
Katharyn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
