Where it comes from

Our story of Kateland

Newfoundland is the oldest surviving European place name in North America, and it is simply a description. John Cabot's voyage produced references to the new founde lande — the newly found land — and the phrase hardened into a name before anybody thought to give the place a proper one, in the way that most first names on a coast are just what the sailors said. Nothing was named for a saint, a monarch or a patron; the name records only that somebody had not been there before. The stress in it is still argued about, with the local pronunciation putting the weight on the last syllable and outsiders putting it on the second, and residents can identify a stranger by which one they use.

The front is a familiar form of a Greek name whose own meaning is disputed. The ending is the ordinary English word, used here as a decorative element in the way American naming uses free syllables. Nothing documents an intention behind the join.

Pronouncing Kateland

KAYT-lund

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The ending reduces to something like lund rather than keeping the full vowel of the word it spells.

Kateland sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1991, with 45 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Kateland sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Kate comes off it at once and needs no explanation anywhere.
  • Every sound in it is familiar, so nobody has to be taught it.
  • The spelling is phonetic and survives being heard once.
What to consider
  • Caitlin, Katelyn and Kaitlyn are all far commoner and will be written for it.
  • The ending is an ordinary English word, which readers will notice.
  • Nothing records the join, so the meaning question has a short answer.
