Lewis Cass was a general, a territorial governor, a senator, a secretary of state and a presidential candidate, and for fifty years his surname was in the newspapers constantly — which is why Cass turns up as a first name for boys in that era, and why a county in Michigan and towns in half a dozen states carry it. A syllable that familiar becomes available for other purposes, and by the middle of the next century it was doing service as the front of a woman's short name instead. Nothing connects the general to this name except the sound, which is exactly how most syllables get into circulation.
