Where it comes from

The story of Kassondra

Medieval England was in love with the Troy story — not Homer, whom almost nobody could read, but the elaborate romances built on top of it, which treated the Trojans as ancestors and their war as the founding event of European chivalry. Names came out of those books and into the parish registers: Cassandra, Hector, Diomed, Troilus. Cassandra was a genuinely common English woman's name for three hundred years, given by families who had no Greek and would have been surprised to learn what happened to her in the original. The name's other great bearer chose silence: Jane Austen's sister Cassandra, who kept her letters for decades and then burned or cut most of them, and in doing so decided almost everything the world would ever know about her sister.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Greek name has never been satisfactorily explained. The second half looks like a word about men or about shining, and the first half has no agreed reading at all. It is old enough to have arrived in Greek from somewhere else, which is usually where explanations run out.

Fashion outlook

Kassondra sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The name is ancient, literary and instantly recognized in every European language.
  • It carries two very different short forms, one playful and one entirely grown up.
  • The spelling is distinctive while the name itself is familiar.
What to consider
  • Cassandra is the standard spelling and hers will be written that way by most people.
  • The name is a byword for being disbelieved, which is a thing she will hear about.
  • It is long, and American classrooms will shorten it within a week.
