Kassidy
Feminine · “descendant of Caiside”
Kassidy is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 21,282 girls against 433 boys since 1880.
Kassidy is the K-spelled form of Cassidy, an Irish surname that crossed into first-name use in America and then, like many surnames before it, settled mostly on girls. The sound is easy on the ear — three syllables that land on the same bright -ee ending as Emily and Bailey — and the K at the front is the one thing that marks this version out from the older spelling.

From Caiside to Kassidy
The story of Kassidy
The name begins as an Irish family name, Ó Caiside, recorded in Ulster and long associated with County Fermanagh, where the family served the Maguire chiefs as hereditary physicians. Emigration carried the surname to America in the nineteenth century, where it became familiar enough as a plain English word-shape that parents began using it up front rather than at the end. Cassidy took hold as a girl's given name in the later twentieth century, and Kassidy followed as one of the K-initial respellings that swept through American girls' names in the same stretch — Kayla, Kaitlyn, Kassandra. Its rise and its gentle step back have both happened within living memory.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kassidy went to 240 girls in 2025, but Cassidy and Kassidi are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 813, which makes it the 367th most-given girls’ name of the year — 671 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 1,977 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 6,697 for Kassidy itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Bobbi test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kassidy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Bobbi climbed just as high around 1971, and its whole arc is on record. The trade-off
- Instantly pronounceable to English speakers, because Cassidy is already familiar as both a surname and a given name.
- Has real short forms in use — Kass and Kassie — so there is a casual version ready without anyone inventing one.
- Sits on a documented Irish family line, Ó Caiside of Fermanagh, going back centuries before it was ever a first name.
- Ends in the -ee sound that carries many well-worn girls' names, so it blends easily in a classroom roll call.
- Cassidy with a C is the default spelling in most people's heads. A Kassidy will be spelling her name aloud fairly often, and correcting forms, mail and teachers for life.
- The K version rose and eased back within a fairly narrow stretch of recent decades, so it reads as belonging to a particular era of American naming rather than as a name of no fixed date.
- Cassidy has some history on boys as well as girls, largely through its surname life. The K spelling is recorded on girls in the US, so this is unlikely to cause confusion in practice.
- She is unlikely to share it with anyone at school — good for distinctiveness, and it also means the spelling never gets to become familiar by repetition.
