Eleni
Feminine · “Uncertain”
Eleni is the modern Greek voice of a name Homer already knew — the Ἑλένη whose flight to Troy opens the Iliad. Greek families carried it to America and kept the Greek stress on the middle syllable, so it arrives with a lift in the middle and a soft -i at the end. Familiar in outline, unusual in this exact spelling.

The story of Eleni
The name is Greek and ancient, borne in Homer's epics by Helen of Sparta and later by the empress Helena, mother of Constantine, who is venerated as a saint across the Orthodox and Catholic worlds — a devotion that kept Ἑλένη in constant use in Greek-speaking families for well over a thousand years. Latin turned it into Helena, English into Helen, Spanish and Italian into Elena, Russian into Yelena. Eleni is the form Greek itself uses today, and it reached the United States mainly with Greek immigrant families in the twentieth century. Nicholas Gage's 1983 memoir Eleni, named for his mother, brought the spelling to readers well outside that community.
Meaningscholars disagree
Uncertain; the leading readings are "torch, light" and a link to Selene, the moon
The Greek Ἑλένη is older than the Greek language's own record of it, and scholars have never agreed on its root. One reading connects it to helénē, a torch or a light; another ties it to Selene and the moon; a third treats it as pre-Greek, borrowed from a language spoken in the region before Greek arrived. No one reading has won, which is why good dictionaries list several.

Pronouncing Eleni
eh-LEH-nee
Greek puts the stress on the middle syllable: eh-LEH-nee. In American English some families use EL-eh-nee instead, with the weight up front. Both are in real use, so it is worth deciding early which one you will correct people toward.

The Breeanna test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Eleni's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Breeanna climbed just as high around 1996, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Breeanna's path sketches the road Eleni is walking now.

The trade-off
- Spelled exactly as it sounds once the stress is known — five letters, no silent parts, nothing to dictate twice.
- Belongs to one of the longest continuously used name lines in Europe, from Homeric Greek through Helen, Helena, Elena and Yelena.
- Comes with short forms people already know — Ellie, Lena, Elle — so a child has easy options without inventing any.
- Recognizable across Greek, English, Spanish, Italian, French and Russian, which makes travel and family on both sides straightforward.
- Slowly gaining ground in US records rather than fading, while staying uncommon enough to be distinct in a classroom.
- The near neighbor Elena is far more familiar to American ears, so Eleni will be read, written and repeated back as Elena for a lifetime. Most bearers settle into a quick, cheerful correction.
- Stress is the real variable: eh-LEH-nee in Greek, EL-eh-nee in some American mouths. Teachers and receptionists will guess, and they will not all guess the same way.
- In the US the spelling still carries a clear Greek association. That is a gift in some families and simply a fact to weigh in others.
- It stays rare enough that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate — good for distinctness, less good on the personalized-keychain rack.
