Our story of Karston
Karst is a place. The Kras is a limestone plateau above Trieste, on what is now the Slovenian and Italian border, and its German name was Karst. Nineteenth-century geologists studying the extraordinary landforms there — sinkholes, caves, underground rivers, bare fluted rock, rivers that disappear and come back out of a hillside miles away — used the local name for the whole class of terrain, and it became the international technical word. Karst covers something like a fifth of the world's ice-free land surface and supplies drinking water to a quarter of the world's population, which is a great deal of responsibility for a regional place name. Slovenian speleology got a head start for the same reason, and the vocabulary of the field is full of Slovene words: doline, polje, ponor.

Not established
The Danish and German Karsten is a worn-down form of Christian. This spelling adds an ending that family does not use, which makes an American build equally plausible. Nothing in the record separates the two.
Pronouncing Karston
KAR-stun
Two syllables with the stress at the front. The second syllable is unstressed and therefore free, which is why the Scandinavian form writes it with an e and this one with an o.

Fashion outlook
Karston sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
- The spelling is phonetic by English rules and needs no explanation.
- It is rare while being built entirely from familiar sounds.
- Karsten, Carston and Carsten are all recorded and will be written for it.
- The unstressed second syllable means the spelling has to be given every time.
- Which of the two possible origins applies is not recorded.
