The doubled r is not cosmetic. In English a doubled consonant shortens the vowel before it, so Karen has a long first vowel and Karren does not — the difference between the a in care and the a in carry. Most respellings change nothing audible. This one changes the name.

Where it comes from

The story of Karren

The most considerable person to carry the name published under someone else's. A Danish baroness who had run a coffee farm in Kenya and lost it wrote the book about that life under a pen name — a man's name, and a Hebrew one, meaning laughter. She kept it for the rest of her career, including for the story about a French cook that became one of the best-loved films of its decade. Asked why, she gave different answers at different times. The plainest is that a woman writing in English about a failed African plantation in the nineteen-thirties had reasons to arrive without a sex attached, and the pen name outlived the reasons.

Karren sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1943, with 100 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Karren sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The doubled letter is doing genuine phonic work rather than decorating.
  • The name is completely familiar in sound and needs no introduction.
  • It has a long and well-documented Scandinavian line behind it.
What to consider
  • Karen is overwhelmingly standard and this spelling gets corrected for life.
  • The base name has acquired a very unflattering colloquial use in the last decade.
  • It is firmly tied to the mid-century decades of its peak.
