Where it comes from

Our story of Kariann

Norse cosmology is unusually literal about weather. In the genealogies of the giants there are three brothers: one is the sea, one is fire, and one is Kari, the wind. They are not gods who control those things; they are those things, given family relationships and a place in a story. The word kari is still recognizable in Scandinavian dialect terms for a gust or a squall. Meanwhile, and entirely separately, Kari became the ordinary Norwegian short form of Katherine and one of the most common women's names in the country for generations, so common that Norwegian uses it in expressions the way English uses Jack and Jill. Two words, one spelling, no connection.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Kari in Norway is a short form of Katherine, and that is well documented. The Norse word and the giant are a separate matter with the same spelling. Which of the two, if either, an American family had in mind is not recorded, and the back half is plainly Ann.

Fashion outlook

Kariann sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are established names, so the compound is unusual without being strange.
  • Kari and Annie are both ready as short forms and both stand alone.
  • It is read correctly at first sight by nearly everybody.
What to consider
  • Written solid it will be split into two words by people who assume the space belongs there.
  • Carianne, Karianne and Keriann are all in the record, so the spelling will be checked back with you.
  • No origin is documented for the compound, so the meaning question belongs to each half separately.
