Kareen
Masculine · “Pure”
Kareen is given to both — 742 boys and 1,306 girls since 1880. See Kareen as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Kareen is one spelling covering two different names. The girls carrying it are almost all connected to Karen and its European relatives; the boys are connected to an Arabic word that has nothing to do with any of them. The spelling sits at the point where the two sound alike, and American records do not distinguish.

The story of Kareen
Katherine is the parent of the first family, and the odd thing about it is how little is certain. The saint the name is attached to, a learned Alexandrian woman said to have been executed on a wheel, leaves no trace in any source for the first five hundred years after she is supposed to have lived, and historians have long treated her as a legend that acquired a biography. The name is real and enormously productive even so: Danish and Swedish wore it down to Karen and Karin, French to Carine, and America respelled all of those. The second family is unconnected. Karim is an Arabic adjective in ordinary use, and the names built on it arrived in the United States by ear, through conversion and through families who brought it with them, which is how a spelling with a double e came to serve both traditions at once.

Pure, or generous
Two answers, depending on which name a particular child was given. If the name is a form of Karen, it descends from Katherine, whose meaning is not securely known and whose traditional reading as pure comes from a later Greek respelling rather than from the original word. If it is a form of Kareem, the Arabic word is karim, generous or noble, and that one is settled. The spelling gives no clue which is meant.

kuh-REEN
Two syllables with the stress at the back, which is what separates it from Karen. Some families say KAR-een, with the weight at the front, and that reading pulls the name back towards Karen entirely.

Fashion outlook
Kareen sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The sound is familiar in both English and Arabic, so it is understood immediately in either setting.
- Final stress gives the name a definite finish and makes it carry well across a room.
- It works for a child of either sex, which very few names in either of its families do.
- The record holds this spelling for boys and girls both, so it does not tell a form which to expect.
- Karen has picked up a specific and unflattering meaning in English over the last few years, and the resemblance is close enough to travel.
- Two live stress patterns, and the first person to say the name aloud fixes it for everyone else.
