Where it comes from

Our story of Karee

Carob seeds are unusually uniform: pick any two off a tree and they will weigh nearly the same, which made them an excellent small unit before there were precision balances. Traders in the eastern Mediterranean used them to weigh gems, and the Greek word for the carob is where carat comes from. The same unit got a second job describing gold purity, where twenty-four carats means pure, because a mark of gold was reckoned in twenty-four of the same seeds. Modern metrology has fixed the gem carat at exactly a fifth of a gram and left the seeds behind, but the word is a tree's, and so is the reason it was ever chosen.

Karee sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1958, with 55 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Karee sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short on paper and quick for a child to learn to write.
  • It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
  • Both short forms come off it without any work.
What to consider
  • Two stress patterns are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • Most children with this spelling are girls, but a real minority are boys; either may be taken for the other.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing to answer with.
