The story of Kanoa
The kapu system regulated Hawaiian life in detail — what could be eaten, touched, entered, and by whom — and noa named whatever was outside it, free and ordinary. The system was formally abolished in 1819, which was among the more dramatic voluntary changes any society has made to itself. Kanoa is used as a personal name in Hawaii for both sexes and appears in American records from there.
Meaning
the free one
From Hawaiian ka, the definite article, and noa, free or released from restriction; noa is the direct opposite of kapu, sacred and forbidden, and the pair structured traditional Hawaiian life.

The Lorenso test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kanoa's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lorenso climbed just as high around 1950, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lorenso's path sketches the road Kanoa is walking now.
Kanoa sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

- It is a Hawaiian word, and Hawaiian families have views about its use by outsiders.
- It is used for both sexes in Hawaii, so forms may guess wrong.
- It is close to Canoa and Kaneohe in an American ear.
