Kandis looks Scandinavian and is not. The k at the front and the s at the end together suggest a northern name — Anders, Mads, Lars — but this is an ancient African royal title with two American spelling decisions applied to it.

Where it comes from

The story of Kandis

Two changes separate this from the classical spelling, and each does something different. The k replaces a c that could only ever be hard in that position, so it changes nothing but the look; the final s replaces an -ace or -ice ending, which does change the sound. Together they produce a name that reads as modern and northern, which is a long way from a Nubian throne. That is not a criticism — it is what respelling does — but it is worth knowing that the four letters at the front are the oldest thing about it.

Meaning

queen mother

The word was a royal title in the kingdom of Kush, applied to a line of ruling women. English took it as a personal name because a translation left it looking like one.

Kandis sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1987, with 135 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Kandis sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is said correctly at sight by anyone who has met the commoner spelling.
  • The title behind it is genuinely ancient and well documented.
  • It is short and distinctive on the page.
What to consider
  • Candace and Candice are both commoner and will be written instead.
  • The Scandinavian look is misleading and will prompt the wrong questions.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the second half of the twentieth century.
