Kandie
Feminine
Kandie changes both ends of Candy and leaves the middle alone. The hard c becomes a k, the y becomes ie, and the two syllables in between are untouched — which is a fair description of how most American respellings work. The edges of a name are where the eye goes, and they are the only part a family can alter without changing the sound.

Our story of Kandie
The two changes are not the same kind of change. Swapping c for k is a substitution: two letters that make one sound in English, and the choice between them is almost pure style — one looks softer, the other harder, and neither is more correct. The ending is different. Ie, y and ee are three ways of writing the same final sound, but they carry different ages: ie belongs to the pet forms of the nineteenth century, y to the twentieth, ee to the last few decades. So a family choosing Kandie was reaching in two directions at once, towards a modern letter and an old-fashioned ending, and produced something that sits in neither period and looks entirely like itself.

Two sources are available and the record does not say which. One is the English word, which reached us from Sanskrit by way of Persian, Arabic and French and originally meant a piece of crystallized sugar. The other is Candace, a title borne by the queens of a kingdom on the Nile, which came into English through the New Testament and produced Candice and Candy as short forms. An American family in the middle of the last century could have meant either, and a birth record has no space to say.

Fashion outlook
Kandie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is warm and immediately readable, and nobody has ever mispronounced it.
- Candace stands behind it as a formal option for anyone who wants one.
- The spelling is genuinely uncommon while the sound is entirely familiar.
- The name is an English word for a sweet, and it has picked up associations over the last fifty years that it did not have in the 1940s.
- Both altered letters will be changed back by people writing it down.
- It reads as a pet form and invites the question of what it is short for.
