The misha in Kamisha is not the Russian one. Misha is the pet form of Michael in Russian and the name of every bear in every Russian folk tale, and the resemblance here is a coincidence of syllables that American naming arrived at independently.

Where it comes from

Our story of Kamisha

The Russian form is worth knowing about on its own account. Misha is the everyday version of Mikhail, and because the bear is the standing character of Russian folklore, and because folk tradition avoided naming a dangerous animal directly, the bear in stories is Misha or Mishka almost universally; a Russian child knows a toy bear by that name the way an English one knows a teddy. The bear chosen as the mascot for the Moscow Olympics was called Misha for that reason, and the closing ceremony in which an enormous version of him floated away over the stadium made a good deal of the country cry. None of that is in this name.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source and no meaning. The name was assembled from a front syllable and an ending both in wide American circulation. The Russian pet form it resembles has a completely different history and there is no record connecting the two, which is worth stating so that the resemblance is not turned into an etymology.

Pronouncing Kamisha

kuh-MEE-shuh

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The first and last vowels are reduced to nothing, which is why the record also holds Kamesha and Kemisha with no audible difference.

Kamisha sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1985, with 63 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Kamisha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The rhythm is the settled American one and the name sounds established.
  • Kam and Kami are two short forms that are both current.
  • Every sound in it is ordinary English.
What to consider
  • Several spellings of the same sound circulate, so spelling it out is permanent.
  • The resemblance to a Russian name invites an assumption about the family's background.
  • It is closely dated to one American generation.
