A camillus, in Rome, was a boy who assisted at a sacrifice — freeborn, both parents living, carrying the box of implements for the priest. The word became a family name, the family name became Camillus and Camilla, and Camilla became Kamil in Poland. That is a long way from an altar boy.

The story of Kamil
The Roman camillus is an unusually specific word: the boy had to be freeborn and have both parents living, and the role belonged to particular rites. The word was old even in Latin, borrowed from Etruscan, and by the classical period it survived mainly as a name. Camillus and Camilla went into the church calendar and out across Catholic Europe, and Polish took the masculine as Kamil, which is where most of the Slavic bearers come from. The Arabic name arrived in the United States by a completely different road, with families from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. The two have met on American paperwork and nowhere else.
Meaningscholars disagree
perfect, complete — or, in the Latin reading, an attendant at a sacrifice
Two entirely unrelated sources reach this spelling. Arabic kamil means complete or perfect, and is a common man's name from Morocco to Pakistan. Polish, Czech and Slovak Kamil is from Latin Camillus, an old Roman name from the word for a boy who served at sacrifices. A Kamil in America may be either, and the spelling does not say.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kamil's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jojo climbed just as high around 1960, and its whole arc is on record. Kamil sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Spelled identically in Polish, Czech, Turkish and Arabic, which very few names manage.
- Both of its sources are documented and neither is invented.
- Two syllables, five letters, and no sound that is hard in any of the languages that use it.
- The stress differs between its two communities, so it will be said two ways.
- Camille is its French relative and is a woman's name there, which causes confusion on forms.
- Most bearers are boys, but a real minority are girls, and the spelling gives no signal either way.
