In the eighteen-nineties a group of Scottish writers produced enormously popular sentimental novels about small village life, full of kindly ministers and deathbed scenes. A critic attacked them as the kailyard school, a kailyard being the cabbage patch behind a cottage, and the insult became the standard scholarly term for the genre. Scottish literature spent the next fifty years reacting against it, and the reaction produced a good deal of deliberately harsh writing about poverty and industry. A word for a vegetable garden is now a technical term in literary history, and it is still not a compliment.
