Kaedence
Feminine · “a falling”
Kaedence is given to both — 576 girls and 32 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
A cadence is a falling. The Latin verb is cadere, to fall, and a musical cadence is the place where a phrase comes down and rests — which is why the word also covers the rhythm of marching feet and the rise and fall of a voice. Kaedence borrows the ae from the Kaeden names and puts it on the front of that word.

The story of Kaedence
Cadence became an American girls' name in the 2000s, one of a small group of musical word-names given at the same moment alongside Lyric, Melody and Harmony. The ae spelling is borrowed from a different family entirely — the Aiden rhyme, where Kaeden and Braeden had made the digraph familiar — and grafting it onto a word-name is a good example of how spelling conventions travel between name families without regard for origin. This version arrived very recently and is given almost equally to girls and boys.
Meaning
a falling; the close of a musical phrase
From the Latin cadere, to fall, through Italian cadenza and French cadence. In music it names the point where a phrase resolves; in speech it names the rise and fall of a voice; in marching it names the beat. All three senses are about the same thing: a pattern that comes down where you expect it to.

The Adamae test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kaedence's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Adamae climbed just as high around 1917, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Adamae's path sketches the road Kaedence is walking now.
Kaedence sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The word behind it is known to every English speaker and has a clean, concrete meaning.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms rather than merely permits.
- Cade is available as a short form and is entirely current.
- Cadence is the standard spelling and will be substituted on nearly everything.
- The near-even split between girls and boys means no form will guess correctly.
- It is a very new name, so a child will be explaining it for some time yet.
