The story of Kadee
Stanton insisted on Elizabeth Cady Stanton, with her birth name kept and used, and objected in print to the convention by which a married woman disappeared into her husband's name entirely. The document she drafted for the Seneca Falls convention in 1848 was modeled on the Declaration of Independence and listed the legal disabilities of married women: no property, no wages, no custody of children, no vote. Her surname, Cady, is an English one of uncertain origin, and it became an American given name in the twentieth century, mostly for girls, alongside the phonetic spellings Kadee and KD. The other likely source of this spelling is Katie, and the two are indistinguishable in the records.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
