Where it comes from

The story of Kaaren

Danish and Norwegian had a vowel between an a and an o that the Latin alphabet could not write, and the solution for hundreds of years was to double the a. Every Danish text used it; place names were full of it; the name Karen appears as Kaaren in the older records. Then, in the middle of the last century, the Scandinavian languages adopted a new letter for the sound — an a with a small ring over it — and replaced the doubled vowel almost everywhere. Almost: a number of towns refused, on the grounds that their names were their own business, and a few of them are still spelled the old way on the road signs. American families who had emigrated before the reform kept the old spelling too, which is why it is in this record.

Fashion outlook

Kaaren sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, clear and easy at any age.
  • The spelling carries a genuine piece of Scandinavian orthography rather than a decoration.
  • The name behind it is understood across Europe.
What to consider
  • Karen is the standard spelling and hers will be corrected to it constantly.
  • The name shares its sound with a word that recently acquired an unkind meaning in English.
  • The doubled letter does nothing in English and invites questions.
