The Roman name this comes from has no o in it. Junius is four letters and two syllables; adding an o produces a spelling that looks Latin and is not, and puts the name in the company of Julius and Cornelius, which do end that way for reasons of their own.

How old is the name Junious?

Where it comes from

The story of Junious

The most famous use of the name in English belongs to somebody nobody has identified. In the seventeen-sixties and seventies a series of letters signed Junius appeared in a London newspaper, attacking the government and the king with a precision that suggested somebody very well informed indeed, and they were the political sensation of the decade. The author was never found. Dozens of candidates have been proposed over two and a half centuries, including several cabinet ministers, and the question is still genuinely open.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Roman family name is old and its derivation is not established; a connection to the goddess Juno has been proposed and cannot be secured. The added letter contributes nothing.

Junious sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1916, with 53 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Junious sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It carries a genuinely ancient Roman family name.
  • June sits inside it as a short form that needs no explaining.
  • It is genuinely rare with a striking historical association.
What to consider
  • Junius is the correct Roman spelling and this gets corrected.
  • The front syllable collides with a month.
  • The generation that used it is now very old.
