Where it comes from

The story of June

Ovid gives two explanations for June in the Fasti — Juno herself, or the iuniores as against the maiores of May — and does not choose between them. June has been chiefly a girls' name in English since the twentieth century; masculine use appears in American records and is in current use.

Meaningscholars disagree

of Juno; the month

From the Latin Iunius, the month named for the goddess Juno, whose own etymology is not settled — a link to iuvenis, 'young', is proposed. Ovid also records a derivation from iuniores, the younger men. The month is settled; the goddess's name is not.

June sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 79 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

  • Junius is available as a full Latin masculine version.
  • One syllable, clean, and never mispronounced.
What to consider
  • It reads as strongly feminine in modern English.
  • It is a month name and reads as one.
  • Juno's own etymology is not settled.
