The story of Johnathon
Jonathan in the Book of Samuel is Saul's son and David's friend, and their bond is one of the most discussed relationships in the Hebrew Bible. The name reached English at the Reformation and rose sharply in twentieth-century America. Because John was so much commoner, families and clerks alike inserted its h, and Johnathon appears in the registers in real numbers, peaking in the early 1990s.
Meaning
the Lord has given
Through Jonathan, from the Hebrew Yehonatan — Yeho, a form of the divine name, and natan, 'he gave' — so 'the Lord has given'. John is Yohanan, 'the Lord is gracious', a different second element entirely. The h inserted into this spelling comes from confusing the two.

Johnathon's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Bart climbed just as high around 1959, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Bart's path sketches the road Johnathon is walking now.

The trade-off
- Jonathan stands behind it with a documented biblical friendship at its center.
- Nathan is available as a short form and is a complete name in its own right.
- Three syllables with a front stress, which holds up against a short surname.
- The h is a confusion with John, which is a different name entirely.
- Jonathan is the standard spelling and this one reads as a misspelling to many people.
- It is closely dated to the 1990s in American records.
