The story of Junaid
Junayd of Baghdad, who died about 910, is called the master of the tradition by later Sufis; he taught a sober mysticism that emphasized staying within the law, in deliberate contrast to more ecstatic contemporaries, and almost every later Sufi chain of transmission runs through him. The name is used across the Arab world and South Asia and reaches American and British records with Pakistani families.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Tay test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Junaid's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tay climbed just as high around 1939, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tay's path sketches the road Junaid is walking now.
