The Julia family never had this ending. Julia, Julie, Juliet and Juliana are Latin, French and Italian respectively, and none of them closes with the -ene that American naming attached to almost everything in the middle of the last century. This is the family's one American addition.

Where it comes from

The story of Julene

The calendar that family's most famous member imposed contained an error of exactly one design decision. A leap day every fourth year, with no exceptions, makes the average year slightly too long — about eleven minutes — and eleven minutes a year is a day every century and a bit. Over sixteen centuries the drift reached ten days and Easter had wandered badly out of position, which is why the reform of the fifteen-eighties both dropped days and added the rule about century years. One arithmetical simplification, and a continent had to skip a fortnight to recover.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Roman family name at the root has no established meaning. The added ending contributes nothing translatable, so the name is unresolved at both ends.

Julene sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1958, with 56 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Julene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The stress at the back gives it a decisive finish.
  • Jules sits inside it as a completely established short form.
  • It is rarer than any of its relatives while sounding entirely familiar.
What to consider
  • Juline and Julaine both appear and the spelling gets queried.
  • The -ene ending dates it firmly to the middle of the last century.
  • No meaning can be given, because the Roman root has none that survives.
