Our story of Juel
The English crown jewels are almost all younger than the Restoration. After the execution of Charles the First, Parliament ordered the regalia broken up and sold: the gold was melted at the Mint, the stones were sold off separately, and the records of the sale survive with the weights and the prices. The point was not profit but abolition — the objects were described as symbols of the detestable rule of kings. When the monarchy came back, a complete new set had to be made at very considerable expense. One object escaped: the coronation spoon, twelfth-century and apparently of no interest to anybody, was bought by a member of the royal household and returned afterwards. The oldest thing in the collection is a spoon because nobody thought it was worth destroying.

Juel is a real Danish family name, carried by admirals and by immigrants. It is also how the English word for a gem looks when written by ear. Nothing in the American record separates the two, and the spelling is held for daughters as well as sons.

Fashion outlook
Juel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Four letters with no difficult sounds make it quick to write and say.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- The Danish family name behind it is genuine and documented.
- Jewel, Jule and Joel will all be written for it.
- The Danish and English readings are completely different.
- Nothing records which of the three origins applies.
