Where it comes from

The story of Judyth

The Book of Judith opens by naming a king and a kingdom that never went together — a ruler of one empire described as king of another, at a date when neither situation held. Scholars read this as deliberate: a signal, in the first line, that what follows is a story rather than a chronicle, the way a folk tale begins in a time that never was. What follows is a siege, a widow who dresses carefully, walks into the enemy camp, is believed, waits four days, and leaves with the commanding general's head in a bag. The book was kept in some Bibles and dropped from others, and painters have never been able to leave it alone.

Meaning

A woman of Judea

The Hebrew name is the feminine of the word for a Judean, so it means a Jewish woman quite literally. It was used in the Hebrew Bible for one of Esau's wives long before the book that made it famous.

Fashion outlook

Judyth sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and plain, and the name is recognized in every European language.
  • It carries one of the few women in the older literature who acts decisively and is praised for it.
  • Judy gives it a warm short form that has never gone away.
What to consider
  • Judith is the standard spelling and hers will be corrected to it on every form.
  • The y dates the spelling to a particular American decade.
  • The story attached to the name is genuinely violent, which some families mind.
